Miami born Steve Aoki has the rather pompous stage name “DJ Steve Aoki Kid Millionaire” Although born in 1977 he can hardly be called a kid anymore, but millionaire is an appropriate description. Not only an amazing electronic musician, performer and DJ; Steve also runs his own record label, Dim Mak, and the associated clothing range.

Steve started out his musical career when he attended the University of California. While studying he found time to produce DIY records and promote concerts. By the time he was in his 20’s he had his own record label called Dim Mak, named after his childhood hero Bruce Lee. The label has gone from strength to strength. Steve Aoki has managed to keep the label fresh and modern. He has an eye for up-and-coming fashionable musicians and that is the reason he is surviving during these tough economic times. So what is the real reason behind his millionaire status? It is common knowledge that his father owned the famous food chain, Benihana, but rumour has it there was a family dispute, and Rocky, Steve’s father, sued four of his children for an attempt to take over his business (worth over US $million). Only Steve and his half-sister were not involved in the scandal, and on the death of his father, Steve inherited a considerable amount. However with a thriving hip record label, and the famous clothing label that has run for 4 years, Steve is raking in his own money. Other sidelines he is involved with are a sunglass collection, and also being featured in the video game NBA 2K8 and NBA 2K9. He also has managed to get quite a few lucrative sponsorships, KR3W Apparel and Supra Footwear, employ Steve to develop and design a range of clothing and shoes for both companies. One last string to his bow, and following his fathers footsteps, is he co-owns a Korean BBQ restaurant “Shin” In his musical career, his debut album “Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles” came out in 2008. His most successful released was a remix “Forever”, the song features Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wanye, and Eminem. It went to the top of Hype Machine’s chart in December 2009. This year, 2010, Aoki released “I’m In The House”, a collaboration with Zuper Blahq – alter-ego of Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am. The song went into the UK Charts at No 29. Now a celebrity in his own right, “DJ Steve Aoki Kid Millionaire” is a title that is most appropriate to the success of this natural genius with a rare mix of business sense.
