Working as a pro electronic musician, I rely on headphones all the time to create music. However when I am travelling or relaxing I use specially designed noise cancelling headsets.

Here’s what I recommend:

1st choice for travelling:
JVC’s HANC250 headphones are what I use when travelling. They have been especially designed to combine high quality sound production with advanced noise cancelling that produces nothing short of an outstanding sound quality.

Using a unique foam design, the ear pieces  form a complete seal around your ears, the headphones can effectively block out 85% of all outside sound.

These headphones are now on sale on Ebay for around $76.

Another very cool feature of these JVC HANC250 Noise Cancelling Headphones is that they are very low profile and light. They can be folded up to fit in a small carrying pouch which make these headphones very safe and easy to transport.

# Advanced noise-cancelling design offers 85% noise reduction.
# Double-housing design for extra sound insulation
# 40mm Neodymium driver
# Memory Foam cushion earpads
# Only 5.3 ounces
# Requires only one AAA battery
# A slim carrying case that protects your new purchase.
# Ability to turn the noise cancelling functions on or off.

Check out this video review of the HANC250s:

Overall, for the price that they charge for these, you will find no better headphones. Yes there are better ones out there, but you will get a lot more for your money with this choice versus a far pricier pair that offer a small increase of capabilities.

2nd choice for price and quality:

The Panasonic RP-HC500 headphones, I recommend for the price, they ‘get the job done’. These relatively inexpensive headphones (about $180) are some of the best noise-reducing headphones that you can buy. There are, of course, many other noise-reducing headphones on the market, but they typically cost around five-hundred dollars. With that said, these Panasonic headphones are great for listening on the subway, bus, in the car, or anywhere that you want to listen to your music without destroying your eardrum.

Available on Ebay for around $150

These headphones offer excellent quality of sound and are comfortable to wear, although a bit bulky. However, this heaviness is offset by their surprising light weight. One drawback is that they only come in an on-ear variety, so that could be a bit of a turn-off. Occasionally, I just put on these headphones to enjoy some quiet time alone. Sometimes, especially in my thin-walled apartments, it’s just nice to listen to nothing at all for a little while.

3rd Choice, Top of the range but there’s a high price to pay:

Denon AH-D5000 headphones are, without a doubt, the best headphones I have ever used in my life. The mahogany craftsmanship and technical brilliance of these headphones combines to create the richest, fullest sound possible. Even though the price is a bit steep, you will not be disappointed.

The lowest price on Ebay is $650

The Denon AH-D5000 headphones were designed for audiophiles, not the average listener. The realism of the sound produced is on a level unmatched by any other set of headphones in the world. Denon has overcome all the usual obstacles to quality sound in headphones with this model.

Technical Details

  • Reference Audio, over -ear- headphones
  • Real Mahogany wood housing. Micro fiber diaphragm
  • Acoustic optimizer for life like audio reproduction
  • Gold plated aluminum connector. Light wieght magnesium frame structure
  • Lightweight magnesium frame

The drivers reproduce sound perfectly in high, mid, and bass ranges. In addition, the Denon AH-D5000 headphones employ a microfiber diaphragm to catch all the details of each sound. Delicate sounds and booming sounds are both reproduced by the microfibers with a precision that cannot be reached with ordinary diaphragms.

The acoustics of the mahogany housing produces a full sound, overcoming any sense of hollowness. The acoustic properties of mahogany are used in both drums and guitars because it produces such a broad range of natural sounds. This set of headphones also uses an acoustic optimizer that adjusts sound pressure on both sides of the diaphragm whenever needed. This makes the bass clear while balancing the low to mid tones.

The headband and ear cups are comfortable and natural. The frame is made of super lightweight magnesium that maximizes comfort during long listening sessions, all day if required.

Finally, the high-quality cable preserves the integrity of the sound transmission all the way through. The cable uses 99.9% 7N Oxygen Free Cable (OFC) technology. To minimize distortion the cables are in a cloth mesh jacket and use an aluminum connector cover. The left and right channel cables are of equal length to keep the high quality of sound.
